The posting this week will be longer than usual as we have several announcements to make, a number of new staff members to introduce, and some comments on the new cell phone/Echolink buzz that is taking place.

The TNT Open Forum effective this evening has moved its schedule time forward by 30 minutes and will be conducted at 8 PM EST (0100 Z). The subject for tonight purposely drifts away from the typical ham related agenda and will cover the do’s, don’ts and art of deep sea fishing. Our Guest this evening is Mr. George Torres KW4LCB who will share his experiences of over 25 years as a commercial fisherman particularly in the deep sea charter boat arena.

Your Southcars support team has started working on a program to encourage new people to our hobby. This will primarily be focused on the youth of our world, but includes children of all ages. We proudly announce the appointment of Mr. Michael P. Asselta KD0CDQ to chair this new endeavor. Along with this appointment Southcars welcomes Mr. Craig W. Hodsdon N3MUI, Mr. G. Jeremiah Williamson WB9EIU, and Mr. Matt B. Israel as members of our Net Control staff.

There is a buzz being heard from around the world. Recently free software has been released that enables the Apple iPone to communicate throughout the world via the Echolink VOIP network. Testimonials on this subject are shown below.

Echolink on the IPhone

With the advent of the cell phone, Ham Radio was pushed further into the background as far as communications were concerned. People were now connecting continuously with voice and text and didn't see the need for the problems of getting a license and the expense of equipment. Only in an emergency situation, where an operator that could generate his own power, was Ham Radio truly called upon. The rest of the time it is just considered a hobby. As always, in a national emergency, Ham Radio will be used because nature, no matter how viscous, cannot keep operators from performing the communication function.

Echolink on the computer has been a big plus for Ham Radio. As of today, Feb 24 2010, there have been over 500,000 downloads of Echolink for computers worldwide. Looking at the station summery as I type, right now there are 4,732 repeaters, links, users, and conference servers connected with the most being in the US at 2,143 but worldwide none the less. Add this to the normal number of operators communicating with their regular equipment at any given time and the numbers become massive.

Now comes the marriage of the IPhone and Echolink. With the power of the IPhone it was bound to happen. (BTW, Echolink is a FREE app both on the computer and IPhone). There are over 100,000 apps written for the IPhone and Echolink is a natural. Now, ANYWHERE you have a cell phone signal, you can connect to any Echolink repeater and communicate just as though you were on your computer at home. I have talked locally (W8MOP) and to my buddies on SCARS in Florida to name a few. That is awesome. I have used it almost every day since I added it to my IPhone. Maybe Echolink on the IPhone will generate an interest in Ham Radio that it needs right now.

It's a very easy setup and the program works perfectly but, as you might expect, there are some restrictions. More info on Echolink can be found at: http://www.echolink.org/faq_iphone.htm

Special operational note: On February 28, 2010 I (K3WS) used my Apple Iphone running the EchoLink Application (yes there is an App for that) connected to the N3YFO-R Echolink node (#295354) (which is connected to the 145.210 Cambria County Repeater) to check in to our Sunday night ARES RACES Net. I might also mention I was mobile traveling East on Rt. 70 out of Breezewood PA. I received excellent audio reports. I remained connected until I signed off and disconnected about 10 Miles from Fredrick MD. It seems that the Echolink App for Iphone allows a relay function that is not blocked by a firewall. It is a very nice way to use an Iphone like an HT. I plan on trying to work one of my HF remote base rigs from the Iphone in the future.

Your Southcars support team is in the process of making some changes to our regularly scheduled Traders Net held at 1500 Z on Sundays. We have found the active verbal participation to this net to be limited, yet the stations connected to be more than reasonable. It is felt to gain more active participation the net will be organized to encompass both a ragchew/roundtable atmosphere in addition to the individual listing of items either wanted or those that are being offered for sale or trade. Those items being listed will remain being listed on our HF traders net that occurs on Wednesdays.

This change in net format will become effective this coming Sunday, December 6th.

Please welcome Clint K6LCS, Craig N3MUI, and Virgil KJ4DUC to the ranks of our active NCS staff.

Tonight’s TNT Open Forum at 0130 Z is once again planed to be an outstanding extravaganza orchestrated by our one and only Pete VE2XPL. He promises the activity to be fun, informative, and free!

1215 EST 11-06-09

We would like to devote this article to the recent world wide change of time and how it affects our Southcars VOIP nets.

First it should be understood that Zulu time, UTC time, and GMT time are all one in the same. What this time convention attempts to do is to set one single time around the world that may be used as a reference to pull everyone together and therein formulate a standard for everyone to go by.

This time convention runs from midnight to midnight starting with the first meridian in Europe and progresses throughout its 24 hour cycle until reaching 0000 (Midnight) or the start of the next day.

For each of us to use this system it is necessary to know how your local time differs from this standard. Each location around the world, unless you live on the first meridian, will differ in either a minus or plus fashion. For one example if we pick New York which operates currently in Eastern Standard Time will find themselves 5 hours behind the standard (-5 Zulu). This means that if it is noon Zulu time it is actually 7 AM in New York according to their local time.

So with this said it is necessary for each of us to first determine what our local time offset is for our location, and then either add or subtract this offset to the current Zulu time, or in the case of our Southcars nets to add or subtract your local offset to the Zulu standard to determine when a net is scheduled to run. One must remember dependent on where you are in the world that some will be in the next day (International Date Line) while others will be in the current or previous day. This is where you need to either add or subtract your local offset from the standard.

Please note that you can find an easy reference to this timing issue at the top of this Breaking News article which reads http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock, this will aid you in determining the proper offset for your local area.

Tonight THURSDAY OCTOBER 8, 2009 at 2030 EDT, which is also FRIDAY 0030 Z, the Southcars TNT Open Forum is proud to present Mr. Clint Bradford’s discussion on Amateur Radio Satellite communication and the ease of doing so with nothing more than a handheld radio.

Speakers Background: Clint Bradford, K6LCS, has been a licensed amateur - as well as GMRS licensee KAF3359 - since 1994, and involved with public service communications. He owns an award-winning Web site covering the JFK assassination. Professionally, he was sales manager for ADI/Premier/Pryme, worked for Motorola, and for Ham Radio Outlet. Pete VE2XPL from Montreal Canada pulled a rabbit out of the hat last night with his TNT Open Forum net on the SCARS server. He enlisted four guest panelists to answer questions that he passed to them out of the blue. Some of the questions asked included, “How were you drawn into the hobby”, “Should CW be a licensing requirement”, “What constitutes proper grounding” etc. The answers from the panel were both interesting and informative, and the questions from the audience were outstanding. Pete plans to make this a normal event each first Thursday of the month.

The TNT presentation for next week will be conducted by the one and only Clint K6LCS who will be discussing amateur radio satellites, and how they can be communicated with by using just a handheld. This will be at 2030 EDT (0030 Z) on the 8th. Clint will be using a .PDF file as he moves through his presentation. An interesting way of displaying server activity and in particular the TNT activity during its net time was supplied by Pete WA3NNA from Newtown Square Pennsylvania.

He has recorded the temperature of his 442.600 repeater which is connected to the SCARS server 24/7. In so doing he has indicated how much warmth the TNT presentations can produce when in full swing. It was noted that his resting temp was around 80 degrees Fahrenheit with no activity and increased to above 130 Fahrenheit with net activity. It was further noted that by following the bottom hour display on his graph that the temperature peaked and remained peaked during the TNT net from 2030 to 2200 EDT and continued with stations discussing the presentation until approximately 11 pm EDT. This display covers the presentation conducted by Tony VK3JED regarding IRLP. We apologize, but due to incompatible formats we are unable to display the graph here. Maybe in future articles.

We wish a great big thank you to Tony VK3JED for last night’s presentation on the TNT Open Forum. We learned everything that one needs to know about how to get started with IRLP, and what to do with it when you get there. This coming Thursday is being very secretive by our TNT Manger Pete VE2XPL. He is promising a different twist, and fun for all, so I guess all we can do is tune in and see what happens!

Effective immediately Mr. Jack Thornburg K4JAK will become Acting Manager for the Eurasia connection. In this capacity he will be responsible for all facets of this wing of the organization and remain in this position until such time as Robert MM3LVQ is comfortable to return to the position. It is our hopes that even after the return of Robert that Jack will continue in a senior management position and provide his leadership and organizational skills for the benefit of all.

His first duty will be to finalize a NCS working schedule, increase the NCS staff availability, and to enter into some additional promotional efforts to increase the awareness amongst the Eurasian hams that this net exists.

We are happy to report that we have had two outstanding open forums over the last two weeks, and those of you who missed them, missed a treat. The opening night covered the Southcars story, and last night covered the ins and outs of our *SCARS* server. Next week the subject will be IRLP from the ground up and our guest speaker will be Tony VK3JED a world known expert in the field.

As our Southcars VOIP organization grows it is necessary that our support team grows and stays in pace. We our privileged to announce the appointment of Kathy KJ4FGT and David KD8HQU as co-managers for our new Training Department. In this capacity they will be overseeing the training of new net controls and sysops, along with keeping our old timers fresh and update as procedural changes come to pass. Neither Kathy nor David are new to the scene as they have been and will continue to be the Database Manager, and Pacific Coast Connection Manager respectively. They will also be continuing their duties as Net Control operators.

Please note that an entry entitled “Southcars VOIP Podcasts” has been added to this website. By clicking on this entry podcasts of various Southcars VOIP nets can be accessed.

Your Southcars VOIP support team is always open to questions, comments, and or suggestions, so please feel free to communicate with us via our email address VOIP@SOUTHCARS.COM.

TONIGHT, THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH AT 8:30 PM EDT (0030 Z (FRIDAY))

The Southcars Open Forum (TNT) will have its opening session this evening. This will be a regular scheduled event occurring each Thursday. It is the intent of this program to offer topics relating to our hobby. Guest speakers will be presenting the subject of the day who are considered experts in the field being discussed. A period is being set aside for questions and answers from our listeners directly following the initial presentation.

Tonight’s topic is the History of Southcars. This will be presented by four leading Southcars members who for the most part have been around since the organization was first started. Southcars dates back some 40 years, and its original intent, its growing pains, its accomplishments, and its grandeur will be discussed in some detail. The four presenting this evening represent collectively 177 years of ham experience with 95 years of hands on Southcars exposure.

Your Master of Ceremonies will be none other than our one and only Mr. Montreal, Pete VE2XPL.

We wish to single out Kathy KJ4FGT this week with a great big thank you for the wonderful job that she is doing as Database Manager. Kathy has new members posted sometimes even before they have checked in, and further before the individual NCS has submitted the information.

MM3LVQ with Eurasia, KD8HQU with the Pacific, and VK3FELA along with KJ4LVX on the Australian net are all to be congratulated for a job well done. This last week was smooth, professional, and fun for one and all.

Next week we will be opening our Southcars Open Forum night on Thursday at 2030 EDT (Friday 0030 Z). This first session will cover the history of Southcars from the beginning, now, and everything in-between. There will be an open question and answer period after the presentation.

The Open Forum session for the 17th will cover all what one would like to know about our *SCARS* server, and will be presented by our one and only Mike KB8ZGL. The following session on the 24th will be on IRLP . This will cover the basics in getting started, to the inner kingdom secrets of the mode, and will be presented by our one and only expert in the field, Tony VK3JED.

Come one, come all, mark your calendar, we plan to have fun!

First and foremost, for those interested in listening to the IRLP discussion this evening please realize that this is being conducted at 8 PM CDT which will make it 9 PM EDT or 0100 Z on the *Missouri* server 452514. Second we would like to devote this issue to two somewhat controversial subjects. We are doing this to simply ask each and every one of you to stop for a moment and think about what is being discussed.

There are many of us who are listeners first and talkers second. The SCARS server gets very busy with connected stations during the course of the day. A reasonable amount of these stations have connected to simply listen to the roundtable activity, and desire to remain in this stance as they go about other things in the background. It has been noted that a number of active stations use this connected list, and in so doing call people at random to join the discussion that may not want or cant join the conversation at this point. Most users of this server are polite and respectful, and when called will stop what they are doing to answer the call. This is not considered fair by many of us and suggests that a better approach is to leave a pause in-between transmissions with the understanding that if someone would like to join the QSO this would be the opportunity for that person to do so. When someone is observed freshly connecting to the server does not mean that this person did so in order to talk. To call this station and immediately ask if they would like to join the QSO in progress is not considered appropriate by many of us.

In yet another area of discussion it is felt that there is a time and place for everything. Many of us have strong views and strong convictions, and quite often conversations on controversial matters may get out of hand. Remembering what is said on this server is also being heard around the world, and one could easily at times misconstrue the original intent of a statement and walk away from the conversation with a misunderstanding of its real meaning. It has been recommended that subjects that do not relate to this hobby, and are controversial in nature be conducted independently of this server.

Your comments regarding anything that has been mentioned or said above are more than welcome at voip@southcars.com.

Please be advised that one of our own is making a presentation on IRLP tomorrow evening. This WILL NOT be conducted on the SCARS server, and full information may be found below by the courtesy of NF9L and KB0EPY.

“The subject for this week’s Technology net is IRLP. Being the other very popular VoIP system used by Hams we will be presenting an outline of IRLP from the basics to the more advanced uses. In addition we will touch on comparisons of IRLP and Echolink and the differences between the two systems. We will discuss IRLP reflectors, Echolink conferences and integrated conference servers. Additionally, a few minutes will be spent explaining EcohIRLP and current projects that affect both networks and the cross-connection of both networks. A general question and answer period will be held following the presentation.

Our speaker is a real expert of this subject, Mike Wolthuis KB8ZGL. Mike has undergrad degrees in Telecommunications and General Business Management and a Masters in IT Management from Michigan State University. He is a former President of the Michigan State University Amateur Radio Club and EchoIRLP Integrated conference manager for the following:
*MICHIGAN* EL 96170, IRLP 9617
*SCARS* EL 96140, IRLP 9614
*ALASKA* EL 8248, IRLP 96180

Please join us and add your comments about issues you may have or ask questions to the group concerning IRLP and VoIP in general as used in Ham Radio.

The Technology net is on the Raytown Amateur Radio Club repeater at 8 pm Friday night 145.170(-) no PL tone. You can also connect on Echolink K0GQ-R node 403841. We are expecting great interest in this subject and have the *MISSOURI* conference server node 452514 available for additional Echolink connections.

REMINDER!

Tonight at 9 pm EDT, 11 AM Australian time (0100 UTC) will be the second net for the Southcars Australian Connection. Last week’s opening was a resounding success, and we expect this second net to be equal to or better than the first.

This Australian net at 0100 UTC will be opening by recognizing our female amateurs worldwide, and their very presence will allow them to check in first and prior to us second class citizens referred to as the male population. Yes that’s correct, Ladies first!

David KD8HQU our Southcars Pacific Coast Connection manager has indicated that he is ready to start the first net on next Tuesday at 1900 PDT (0200 UTC) August 4th. He has accomplished an email mailing to over 500 amateurs which included 9 states and two Canadian provinces in behalf of this startup. Come one, come all!

We are proud to announce that Mr. Robert Todd MM3LVQ from Paisley Scotland has accepted the managerial position for the Southcars Eurasia Connection net that will have its opening at 1600 UTC on Monday August 24, 2009.

Plans and particulars are being worked out by Pete VE2XPL for our Southcars Open Forum night scheduled to start in early September.

With great pride we wish to thank our Australian Connection team for a spectacular opening session. This net which is designed to service the Oceania, South Korea, and Japan areas produced an overwhelming participation. New Zealand, Australia, and Japan were represented with other stations around the world. Our special thanks to John VK3FELA, Stacy KJ4LVX, and Heather KJ4LVZ for putting on a grand Broadway show.

Your Southcars VOIP Support Team is currently involved in last minute planning for the upcoming West Coast net on August 4th. In doing so we have fine tuned several aspects. The name of the net has been changed to the “Southcars Pacific Coast Net” in hopes that this more clearly identifies that this net covers from the bottom of California through the top of Alaska and all points in-between.

We are proud to announce that Mr. David H. Ware KD8HQU has accepted the position of Manager for the Southcars Pacific Coast Net. David comes to us with a strong background in management and communication, and will hold the responsibility to initiate, man, and market this wing of Southcars.

Plans are moving forward for the establishment of our European Connection and the creation of an open forum night. These details will be published as they become available.

Your Southcars support team is marching ahead with gusto relative to the new regional sessions, and the open forum activity. A mass mailing to all registered echolink users in the Oceania area, and South Korea has been accomplished. It is suspected that Japan (high volume) will be mailed yet this week.

John VK3FELA along with Stacy KJ4LVX has established 11 AM Australian time on Thursday (9 PM EDT Wednesday) for the Australian connection net. We anticipate that the first net will start sometime within the next 2 to 3 weeks. TJ KB8JXX from Anchorage along with his right arm James KC7VUN have been contacted about running the Alaska connection portion, and both at this time appear most favorable. The European section has yet to be opened for discussion.

Pete VE2XPL our program manager for the open forum sessions is marching along in fine fiddle. He will be out of pocket between July 17th and Aug 1st while on vacation with his family. He has established a program schedule of 12 topics which fills the need for a 3 month period. Guest speakers in some cases have been noted, and arrangements for their willingness and availability are yet to be worked out. The first net is tentatively scheduled to occur during the first week in September.

This coming Saturday your net controls will be from Pennsylvania, and Florida in the morning, and Kentucky, and Florida in the afternoon.

Your VOIP support team has been spending a considerable amount of time lately on two major programs that will be introduced to the net. First we are creating and staffing regional sections around the world who, when said and done, will be running one hour nets during the week. Although the times and days are not yet finalized and example would include: Tuesdays at 8 PM hosted by the Alaska connection, Wednesday at 8 PM hosted by the Australian connection, and Thursdays at 6 PM hosted by the European connection. All times mentioned in this example are local times in those specific areas.

The rationale behind this move is to open net proceedings during the times that are most convenient for those participating. One can quickly understand that when we run a Saturday net at 9 AM EDT from the east coast of the United States, that it is 11 PM in Australia. Further a 2 PM EDT net would be 4 AM in Australia and so it goes around the world.

In addition Southcars VOIP will be introducing a once a week, one hour open forum starting in early September. This open forum will be subject specific, and advanced notification of the subject matter will be posted. The session will be open for questions and comments from the participants, and will be narrated by an expert on the subject being covered. Pete VE2XPL from Montreal Canada will be program manager in charge, and the subject matter that he will be picking from will be technical and non technical and include a broad range of interest to the ham community.

We wish to welcome two new net controls to the southcars service who will be making their presence known this coming Saturday. This will be Stacy KJ4LVX from Louisa, Kentucky, and John VK3FELA from Richmond Victoria Australia. David KD8HQU from Davison Michigan will be starting the first hour this coming Saturday, and Kathy KJ4FGT a school teacher who travels between Florida and Michigan has joined the Southcars Support Team in the Administrative and clerical arena. Currently this brings your administrative support team to 27 people strong or 2.7% of the membership.

Please keep your attention on this Breaking News page as often as possible over the next several weeks. Notices will be published as news worthy information becomes available in support of a expansion plan for increasing the Southcars VOIP coverage and membership, making net times more comfortable for worldwide participation, and bringing the net closer to a local level of interest.

Tomorrows net will be conducted in the normal fashion. We will be in the midst of this year’s Field Day activity in both their preparedness and actual operational stages. With this in mind the following operational structure will be placed in action by your acting NCS.

The NCS, when practical to do so, will give every attempt to pull a field day station out of sequence, and give them the opportunity to check in and move on for other contacts. The field day station when checking in during a normal listing conducted by the NCS should give not only the suffix of their call, but further should append “Field Day” to the end of their suffix.

The NCS will ask the following information from the field day contact: Call being used by the club or organization, call of the operator establishing the contact, and an email address that can be used to forward net information to the field day administrators. It should be understood that this net will not be turning the operation over to the field day site to acquire additional contacts. The net log will be emailed to you to be used in any fashion you find necessary.

May the weather hold, may the RF flow in abundance, and may everyone have fun!

The Traders net this last Wednesday went fairly well. The 40 meter band although not at its best was usable in most instances. The need of a simulcast remote station will be with again next week the 24th, but with the return of Rick ND4Z on July 1st, things should be back to normal.

We would like to welcome two new NCS members to our staff. Dave KD8HQU from Davidson Michigan, and Mike KI4JRT from Pembroke Pines Florida. Dave will be heard running a portion of the net tomorrow between 9 and 10 EDT, and Mike will be heard running the 10 to 11 EDT session.

It has occurred to your Southcars Support Team that we would be more than willing to make time for the club stations participating in field day on the 27th to join us and obtain additional contacts from our membership. In order to keep the net running smoothly we would appreciate working out the details with those interested before the 27th. If any of you are interested please communicate with us by directing email to: VOIP@SOUTHCARS.COM.

Please take note that tomorrows Southcars Traders Net simulcast may or may not take place at 10 AM EDT (0200 UTC). This is based on one known and one unknown set of circumstances.

First our regular scheduled NCS is out of pocket for the next two weeks, which precludes any direct transmission from the NCS’s location. This means that if the net is to be simulcast it will be done from a remote location, and in so doing some of the stations that are being heard by the acting NCS may not be heard by the remote relaying station due to band propagation.

Second band condition may be such that the remote relay station for the simulcast may have difficulty in hearing the active NCS, and if this is the case it would be to the best interest of the net to forgo the rebroadcast.

Notification will be made at 10 AM EDT on the Scars server as to whether we will be in a go or no go posture.

Tomorrows net will be chaired by stations in North Carolina and Kansas during the morning sessions along with Russia and Israel in the afternoon. The Southcars Traders nets on Sundays have had excellent connectivity participation. However it should be noted that only minimal levels of actual participation have been noted on the behalf of the users. This is to say that in most cases it has been the reading of email submittals and or carryover listings from previous HF trader’s nets. It is the hope of your VOIP support team that the pendulum will swing in the near future where more stations will be actively listing their wants, needs, and items for sale. The intent of this net is to form active participation from our members, and not let it be a one-sided broadcast of items available or needed.

Announcements that will be read on the net tomorrow follow:

1-POSITIONS ARE OPEN IN A NUMBER OF AREAS TO HELP SUPPORT THE HF AND VOIP NETS. THESE INCLUDE NET CONTROL POSITIONS, SYSOP POSITIONS, CLERICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP, PLEASE DROP US A LINE AT VOIP@SOUTHCARS.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION.

2-THE NEW SOUTHCARS VOIP TRADERS NET FOR TRADING, BUYING AND OR SELLING AMATEUR RELATED EQUIPMENT OR ACCESSORIES MEETS EVERY SUNDAY AT 1100 EDT (1500 ZULU) ON THIS SERVER.

3-THIS SERVER IS NOW OPERATING WITH A 4 MINUTE TIME OUT TIMER. IT IS THE HOPE OF YOUR SUPPORT TEAM THAT THOSE PARTICIPATING WILL ACT ACCORDINGLY.

Our next scheduled net will be the Traders Net at 10 AM (1400 UTC) tomorrow. The first opening of our Sunday two-way Traders Net took place last Sunday. Participation was good with 25 connected stations, and an undetermined group of RF participants. We are in hopes that next Sunday there will be more verbal participation, as this last Sunday turned out to be more of a listening session on the part of the users.

Your *SCARS* server has made a change in its control function, and it is the hope of your Southcars VOIP Support Team that others will follow suit. We have enabled a 4 minute mute window that will place any station into a muted state if they approach and or exceed the 4 minute timer. The way this will work is if a station reaches this magic 4 minute window during their transmission the server will automatically place that station in mute, and will keep that station in that state until the station un-keys. Once that station un-keys he or she is free to make an additional transmission providing that the channel is not already occupied by someone. It should be further noted that when a station is muted by the server, that another station on the network can immediately make a transmission and the network will continue even if the original person never un-keys.

So attempting to put this in perspective, if all of us set our timers to 4 minutes, we should all be operating in sync or some facsimile thereof.

At 11 AM EDT (1500 UTC) this coming Sunday on the *SCARS* server, Southcars will be running a VOIP Traders Net with full two-way communication for all participating. This will be identical in form to that conducted on each Wednesday on HF and simulcasted on the server. The difference with this Sunday session is that it will only be covering VOIP and its associated RF users, and will have no HF involvement.

This session on Sunday the 24th is being considered a Beta Test. Although we do not envision any technical issues, we will be interested in determining participation levels, whether this hour is comfortable for those concerned, and whether this net should be scheduled as a regular Sunday event in the future.

Those items listed on the Wednesday net will again be mentioned on the Sunday net, and those new items obtained on the Sunday net will be mentioned again on the following Wednesday net providing full publication for all concerned. Further those desiring to make a listing or indicate a want may do so before the net by addressing the information to ND4Z@YAHOO.COM.

The Southcars VOIP Website is under redesign and will be available to you shortly. In doing so the site will hopefully now supply for you easier access and availability to the contents. This breaking news page will be found dead center and at the top of the home page, which is the page you first come to when connecting to www.voip.southcars.com. In addition we are doing away with the black background found on this article page to do away with some of the problems are members have been having. Those in particular amongst us who use a internet mailing server have had problems displaying these articles in full color registration due partly to the fact that they do not use an internal mail program and rely on there supplier and internet browser to handle the registration and color coordination.

Three announcements will be made at the start of the net tomorrow which are:

1-NCS PERSONNEL ARE NEEDED ON BOTH THE HF AND VOIP NETS. PLEASE DROP US A LINE AT VOIP@SOUTHCARS.COM IF INTERESTED. WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS A FULL INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR FOR THIS NET; WE CURRENTLY HAVE A NUMBER OF NEW NCS’S ABOARD FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, AND ARE VERY MUCH INTERESTED IN ADDING TO THIS LIST.

2-WE ARE ALSO INTERESTED IN ADDING TO OUR ADMINISTRATIVE VOIP SUPPORT TEAM PERSONNEL IN AREAS OF LONG RANGE PLANNING, CLERICAL SUPPORT, MEDIA SUPPORT, AND GENERAL ADMINISTRATION. IF YOU THINK YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES, PLEASE DROP US A LINE AT VOIP@SOUTHCARS.COM.

3-Picnic in Hiawassee Georgia:

On Saturday May 23 (Memorial Day Week End) beginning at 8 AM till with the picnic around 12:30 to 1 PM. A portable HF station will be in operation and depending on band conditions may operate most of the day. The picnic will be held at the same place as in the past, the Upper Pavilion at the Hiawassee, GA, Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Please come with a picnic item to be shared with the group and a donation box will be available to off set expenses. We want to thank Jerry N5ICT (Ice Cold Tea) for heading up this effort. Anybody wishing to help out in the set up and organizing of the picnic to please E-mail Jerry at n5ict@aol.com or call Jerry’s cell at 239-770-8798. We also need NCS operators to volunteer to run the net from the picnic as well. The station will be provided. Please plan on attending!!

The *SCARS* server has been seeing quite a bit of use this past week during periods of none net operation. Many stations are staying connected day and night and some interesting conversations may be heard from stations all over the world.

We would particularly like to welcome Ravi 9Y4SRR member E0704 and his ham friends from Trinidad who have been giving us all an enjoyable island exposure.

The Net for tomorrow morning will be hosted by W4FHC in North Carolina for the first hour, followed by VE2XPL in Canada. Your afternoon session during the first hour will be hosted by UA3QGN from Russia, and the following hour by KB8JXX from Anchorage Alaska.

The Traders Net will be conducted remotely from Kathleen Florida this coming Wednesday by ND4Z. There are some technical issues yet to be worked out as Rick will only be in this location for one week. Updates will be posted on these issues as information becomes available.

Your VOIP support team feels that several items of concern and interest should be discussed. First with the growing popularity of the SCARS server both during net operation and normal rag chew sessions several important facts should be mentioned.

With the high percentage of Links and Repeaters participating their Time out Timers (TOT) should be considered. A normal 2 to 3 second pause between transmissions would help this situation. Additionally a 5 minute timer is active on the server which will mute a station who is transmitting at or beyond this interval.

We respectfully ask any station that is connecting to the server who in doing so brings along with them a local repeater or link to please take measures to mute any local announcements, courtesy beeps, ID’s and squelch tail activity. We believe that this request speaks for itself.

For those who have not yet received the word, please be advised that Southcars is now offering a simulcast of the Wednesday 10 AM EST (1400 UTC) Traders Net conducted on 7.251 MHz on the SCARS server for our echolink and IRLP members and quests world wide.

NEXT NET 0900 TO 1100 EST (1300-1500 UTC) & 1300 TO 1500 EST (1700-1900 UTC) SATURDAY MAY 2, 2009. CONNECT TO *SCARS* TOMORROW APR 29TH FOR THE FIRST SOUTHCARS TRADERS NET ON THE *SCARS* SERVER. (USE ECHOLINK 96140 OR IRLP 9614)

The southcars traders net which has been running for many years on 7.251 MHz will now be simulcast each Wednesday morning at 1000 EST (1400 UTC) on our new server *SCARS*. The opening preamble is being posted here for general information.

Good Morning, this is the Southcars, South Coast Amateur Radio Service, Traders Net. This net meets every Wednesday morning at 10 AM for the purpose of trading, selling or buying amateur related equipment and accessories. This net follows the guidelines and procedures sit forth by Southcars and FCC Part 97 rules and regulations regarding a non commercial involvement.

It should be noted that this net in addition to direct contact and monitoring on 7.251 MHz is also simulcast to the world at large through the Southcars server known as *SCARS*. This simulcast to those on Echolink, IRLP, VHF, and UHF RF should realize that this is a one way broadcast. This is again in keeping with the FCC rules and regulations, and it should be understood that the active NCS will not be monitoring for any transmissions initiated by those on the receiving side of this simulcast.

All stations are more than welcome to submit your needs, wants, or items to be sold via email to ND4Z@YAHOO.COM prior to the net. These email submittals will be included either during the current net or at the earliest next net session.

Your Net Control for this session is _______ I’m located in ______ and we will now start with those on frequency with items of need or sale. Please realize that this is not a social net, we do not take check-ins as we do for the normal Southcars sessions and your cooperation to this fact would be appreciated.
